Every week or every month the magic payslip arrives to replenish the funds of almost two million employees nationwide. It is the payroll person who makes sure that we all get paid, on time and with the correct amount of deductions made from our gross pay.

Payroll is critical to the success of every business as all employees must get paid. Employers are always seeking qualified personnel to ensure that the work is done efficiently and correctly, to keep both the employees and the Revenue happy.

What does it involve?

To work in this field you will need: a good head for figures; a tolerance for detail; the ability to work to strict deadlines and the talent to work in a pressurised and changing environment.

The work is varied, challenging and demanding, but it offers enormous job satisfaction. Dealing with ever changing Revenue, Social Welfare and Employment Law legislation, working to strict deadlines, being proficient in the use of IT and dealing with a myriad of queries from employees and management alike, means that the role of payroll personnel is a highly demanding one, whether operating as a one-person department, or as a member of a team in a large multinational.

What comes next?

The Irish Payroll Association (IPASS) is Ireland’s leading provider of Payroll and VAT training and certification. The qualifications are accredited by QQI (Quality Qualifications Ireland) as a Higher Education Level 6 Special Purpose Award. Classes are held nationwide and by distance/online learning.
