Course Description
Project Management in Practice
Institute of Public Administration
Project management skills have never been more in demand. There is a clear need for a shift in the public service to a project management approach to effectively deliver on business plans. Properly implemented, the project management approach ensures understanding, focus, confidence, oversight and success.
This two-day project management in practice training programme is designed to enable you to apply your learning immediately, in a flexible, non-prescriptive manner that takes account of the practicalities of working in the public service. The course is aimed at those who need to develop a better understanding of the critical tools and techniques of project management that help focus your planning, minimises risk and speeds delivery. It will be of benefit to anyone involved directly in project work – whether in a small group effort or a significant undertaking, those who work with project teams but who are not part of them and who wish to be more effective through a better understanding of the language of project management, and new project managers.
The Project Management in Practice course will cover the following areas:
- Introduction to Project Management: in which you will learn about the organisational context for projects and core project management principles.
- Initiating your Project: in which you will learn about the critical activities in starting up the project, engaging with stakeholders and securing approval.
- Defining your Project: in which you will learn how to define and structure project work and create schedules to enable effective management of the project.
- Managing your Project: in which you will learn how to monitor and control project work and be aware of the problems and issues that can often derail projects.
- Closing your Project: in which you will learn about the important common closing activities that are often overlooked by project teams.
