Course Description
Mixed Textiles – Crochet, Knitting and Embroidery
Tramore Road Campus
Participants will be afforded the opportunity to acquire the basic stitches and techniques of crochet, knitting and embroidery, utilizing them in various projects. For example, in crochet and knitting, participants will be shown how to construct popular fashionable accessories, such as, scarves, cowls, small bags, baby cardigans and blankets. Learners will also receive advice and instruction in interpreting various crochet and knitting patterns. In the area of embroidery, stitch and techniques particular to specific embroideries, such as, Mountmellick, Sprigging and traditional surface embroidery, will be used to create different projects. Participants will also be instructed how to use traditional embroidery stitches to embellish crocheted, knitted and fabric garments. This concept can be extended to revitalize casual clothes, including jumpers, tops, and scarves. For example, a jumper can be given a new lease of life by attaching a crochet trim to the sleeves; similarly, the garment itself could also be lengthened in this way. Imaginative ideas such as these can have a positive impact on the environment with an emphasis on recycling/upcycling clothes.
