Film and Literature Appreciation
Course Description:
This class will appeal to anyone who appreciates both movies and novels.
It involves taking a different movie/novel tie in each week and discussing the aspects that have made both the both and its movie adaptation into classics. We take a different book/movie each week and these can range from the classic era of Hollywood e.g. 1930s-50s, the ‘New Wave’ of the 1960s and 1970s and books/movies from more recent decades. Each week we would look at extracts from the book and clips from the movie adaptation, examining such elements as plot, theme, symbolism and characterisation.
The course is not academic .ie. it is not heavy with literary or film theory although the ‘film’ side of the course does look at aspects of cinematography as a means of telling an onscreen story. Notes are provided with each class that expand upon some of the subjects discussed in the class. It is not necessary to have seen the movie or read the novel being discussed on a given evening. All that’s required of the student is an enthusiasm for storytelling and a curiosity about the techniques that novelists and film makers use to convey a message.
