Course Description

Ancient Anatolia from the Hittites to King Croesus

Trinity College Dublin

This lecture-only module provides an introduction to the ancient cultures of Anatolia (Asia Minor/modern Turkey) and the history, archaeology and art. The diverse people of this important Mediterranean region are less well-known than their Near Eastern counterparts to the south and Greek contemporaries to the west, but equally impressive. Beginning with the Hittites and covering kingdoms from the mountains of Urartu, to Phrygia, Lydia, and the Ionian coast, we will also examine the reality behind Herodotus’ tales of legendary kings (including Midas, Croesus, and Cyrus the Great).

Lead lecturer Dr Selga Medenieks is an Australian Classicist and Research Fellow with Trinity. Her work focuses on intersections of the ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean worlds, with a special interest in the political uses of religion, religious institutions, and ritual.
