Advanced Diploma in Mediation

INTRODUCTION
Alternative dispute resolution mechanisms have never been of greater importance than they are at present. In particular, mediation and access to qualified mediators are becoming a key feature of the Irish legal system. This is in part thanks to the coming into force of the Mediation Act, 2017.
King’s Inns launched this exciting new course in mediation, which is accredited by The Honorable Society of King’s Inns and the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland (the MII).
PROGRAMME AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
This course will equip participants with the practical skills required to act as a mediator in a range of circumstances.
The course objectives are to enable participants to:
- Distinguish between different styles of, and contexts for, mediation while also knowing when a dispute is suitable for mediation;
- Apply the process phases of mediation in practice;
- Learn and exercise appropriate communication skills in mediation;
- Describe and apply conflict theory to the practice of mediation;
- Know the foundation concepts of mediation and contrast same with other ADR mechanisms;
- Explain and apply the Mediation Act, 2017 and other relevant sources of law; and –
- Recognise and respond to ethical issues in mediation.
WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This course is suitable for both lawyers and non–lawyers. Whether you would like to be equipped to mediate a formal legal dispute, or a dispute between work colleagues, members or volunteers of a club, society or other body, this course will provide you with the skills and knowledge necessary to mediate.
Having a diverse group of professionals studying this course together allows participants to learn from each other, especially during tutorials and Q&A sessions.

Course Duration | Six in-person teaching days plus two assessment days |
Course Times | The most effective delivery methods will be used – with an emphasis on in-person workshops led by subject matter experts in mediation. This will be supported by a combination of online learning, self–study, and in-person small group training and feedback. Live teaching will take place over six in–person teaching days, followed by two assessment days, on which in–person attendance will also be required for all students. Participants will be required to assist with one another’s assessments as well as attending their own. Participants are advised to allocate 20 hours of self–study before in–person training commences to read course materials. |
