The second public talk in the Meet the Researcher programme at NCAD will be given by Tara Whelan on Tuesday 4th February at 5pm in the Harry Clark Lecture Theatre, NCAD. The talk will focus on her current project titled: Women’s Ways of Making: Barriers to entry and sociotechnical identity in the Maker Movement.
Women’s Ways of Making: A Public Talk
The Maker Movement is a global trend centred on people’s ability to be creators as well as consumers of things. Though encompassing of a wide variety of techniques, materials and approaches, the Maker Movement places particular focus of technological modes of production. While advocates of the movement point to its potential in democratising access to – and understanding of – technology, Maker practice and Makerspaces (community workshops where hobbyists can access tools not normally available to them) remain de facto exclusionary, with demographics of users similar to the tech industry at large.
Tara Whelan is a designer, researcher and NCAD lecturer based in Dublin.
The NCAD Meet the Researcher programme is free and open to public audiences. All welcome. National College of Art and Design, 100 Thomas Street, Dublin D08 K521, Ireland.
