The landscape of adult education in Ireland is evolving, with a significant uptick in lifelong learning activities among adults aged 25-64.

The latest data for Quarter 4 of 2023 reveals a promising trend, marking an increase from previous years and highlighting the growing commitment of Irish adults to continuous learning and professional development.

Significant Growth in Lifelong Learning

In Quarter 4 of 2023, 14% of adults in the 25-64 age bracket were engaged in lifelong learning activities. This represents a notable increase from 11.8% in the same period in 2022, showcasing a heightened enthusiasm for education and skill enhancement among the Irish adult population.

Breakdown of Learning Activities

The surge in lifelong learning is distributed across various types of educational activities:

  • Formal Learning: 4.6% of adults participated in formal educational programs. This includes enrollment in accredited courses leading to certifications, diplomas, or degrees.
  • Job-Related Non-Formal Learning: 5.6% of adults engaged in non-formal learning activities directly related to their employment. These activities often involve workshops, seminars, and training sessions aimed at improving job performance and career prospects.
  • Other Non-Formal Learning: 4.8% of adults took part in non-formal learning activities not necessarily related to their jobs. These can include personal development courses, community education programs, and hobby-related classes.

A Growing Community of Learners

The total number of adults engaged in lifelong learning activities in Quarter 4 of 2023 reached 388,700. This figure represents a 20% increase compared to the same quarter in 2022, indicating a substantial rise in the number of individuals committed to enhancing their skills and knowledge.

The increasing participation in lifelong learning is a positive indicator of the value placed on education and continuous professional development in Ireland.
