Kerry College Monavalley Campus has teamed up with Amazon Web Service (AWS) and Sumitomo Electric Lightwave to launch an exciting new upskilling opportunity.  As part of Kerry College Open Week running from the 19th to 23rd February, AWS and Sumitomo Electric Lightwave will run a unique fibre splicing workshop at Kerry College Monavalley Campus.

This two-day workshop runs on the 20th and 21st February and is open to members of the public.  Anyone 18 years of age or older, with an interest in learning more about fusion splicing, fibre optics and cabling, is welcome to register.  No prior experience is necessary.  The course content will cover fibre optic installation, repair and splicing, and you will have an opportunity to practice real-world deployment techniques ranging from hand tools to state-of-the-art automated fusion splicing technology.

The course is fully funded, so there is no fee for applicants who wish to attend.  Places are limited and have already started to fill, so those wishing to attend are encouraged to register in advance.

Kerry College Monavalley Campus Manager Mr. Con O’Sullivan noted that “Amazon Web Services and Sumitomo Electric Lightwave are globally recognized leaders in Cloud computing and optical fibre technologies and solutions for data centre, enterprise, and communication networks.  We are delighted to welcome them to Kerry College, and collaborate with them to deliver this unique learning and development opportunity for Kerry.” Mr. O’Sullivan added that “This is a fantastic programme for those already in the industry who want to develop their skills and knowledge even further, but also for potential career changers who are interested in learning more about this exciting and growing industry.”

Kerry College Monavalley Campus has a proud track record of the delivery of training in key skills areas over many years.  They have successfully introduced and delivered unique courses in Fibre Installation, Civils for Fibre, and Overhead Lines.  Mr. Owen O’Donnell, Further Education and Training Director with Kerry ETB outlined that “Kerry ETB made a strategic choice in the last decade to concentrate on key skills required in the transmission and networking industries.  Working with local and national employers, we introduced courses in these areas to meet the key skills needed to help secure the future of these industries both locally and nationally.  Since the introduction of these courses, we have trained hundreds of graduates who have progressed to successful careers in these industries.”  Mr. O’Donnell noted that “These courses are unique to Kerry College, and this training cannot be completed anywhere else in the country.  The two-day workshop being run in conjunction with AWS and Sumitomo Electric Lightwave is another valuable addition to the Kerry ETB offering.”

The development of these courses culminated with the launch by Kerry ETB of the Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician (WTMT) Apprenticeship in 2022.  This exciting new apprenticeship welcomed its first class in 2022, and is planning its third intake in 2024.  Mr. O’Donnell added “Kerry ETB and Kerry College continue to review our Further Education and training offering, and this has led to the development of the WTMT Apprenticeship, which is arguably the most strategically important apprenticeship launched in Ireland in recent years.  This apprenticeship helps secure our country’s energy future, and helps move us as a country to a more sustainable form of energy generation.”
