Dublin Camera Club are running an Introduction to Photography course, which takes place online from  Wednesday 22nd September 2021 and runs for 9 weeks.

The course will comprise on-line classes delivered live by experienced members of the club, they will  allow for Q&A sessions during the classes and will also comprise small group practical sessions which will be held mainly outdoors taking account of the COVID limitations in force.  Dublin Camera Club will also allocate an experienced photographer & member of the club as your tutor for the duration of the classes.  You will be able to discuss issues with your tutor, send images to him/her for suggestions as to how to improve and you will have the practical sessions with your tutor.

Get beyond the use of your phone.

This course assumes no prior knowledge of photography and is designed that in the period of 9 weeks that you will have a good understanding of your own camera and its controls and that you will be able to use your camera to produce great shots.

You will understand the principles of exposure so as to control the image you want, whether that be a crisp landscape, memories of your travels or an image of a family member or friend giving that sought after sharp portrait on a soft background.

You will learn the basics of editing your images using appropriate inexpensive/free software, improving on the image that you captured in your camera. (Post processing)

Elements of good composition will be dealt with and the basic compositional dos and don’ts to improve your images.  Both colour and black and white image production will be dealt with.

While the focus of the course is on the use of digital cameras though film is not forgotten and neither is the camera that you have with you all the time – your phone camera.  We will try to incorporate the use of the phone camera in the classes.

The course is mainly carried out on line, you will nonetheless be a registered member of the club for the duration of the course and you will be able to partake of the activities of the club as a member for the duration of the course, should you wish you will be able to join the club at a discounted rate for your first year (€60).  Following the course you should be able to produce good images with confidence and selected images will comprise an on line exhibition.

The course will take place on line via Zoom or similar technology.  The course has been updated to reflect the growing accessibility to digital and electronic technology and the virtual nature of the presentations however the use of film is not ignored.  Use of Mobile Phone for photography will be included through the course as appropriate, its the camera you have with you all the time.  Classes will be live to facilitate Q&A sessions, both during and after the classes.

Each Wednesday session will provide you with 90 minute class, comprehensive notes emailed to you after each class, suggestions for photo exercises and guidance on where you can get further information which it is hoped will be monitored by an experienced member of the club who will be assigned to you as an ongoing monitor.

Persons taking the classes are automatically enrolled in the club as Associate Members and become eligible for all of the activities of the club during the period of the classes.  In addition they have the opportunity to apply for full membership of the club at the discounted rate of €60. This membership runs one year from the commencement of the classes.  Club membership entitles the student to participate in all the club activities, including the free workshops and competitions for the full year.
