The Goethe-Institut Irland is currently exhibiting Bibliomancy, a site-responsive intervention, from French artist and Städelschule alumnus Alexis Gautier in the Institut’s Return Gallery and beyond!
French artist and Städelschule alumnus Alexis Gautier took part in the exhibition project “The German School”, presented by the Goethe-Institut Irland and the Städelschule in 2021/2022 in the Institut’s Return Gallery and beyond.
For this Gautier developed a site-responsive intervention titled Bibliomancy (2022). Using the fragment of a book he found in the Goethe-Institut’s library (Speculations about Jakob by Uwe Johnson) Gautier fragmented the text extract over the 64 doors dividing the institute in rooms and corridors.
A copy of the book can be viewed and read in the library.
Alexis Gautier is based in Brussels and whilst more often working with artists and craftspeople in Asia or elsewhere, to produce artefacts that bear witness to the complexities of globalisation, colonialism, and artistic practice. He provokes encounters and dialogue, reflecting on the notion of exchange and value, as well as on authorship and the protocols of exhibition-making.
