An Introduction to Woodcarving

Trinity College Dublin

Well-known sculptor Conleth Gent is running a woodcarving course for two hours per day, one day a week, over a five-week period. The course is based in the Trinity Botanic Gardens at Dartry, Dublin 6 (nearest Luas Station, Milltown).

The main focus is on creativity and individuality and nurturing it through the medium of woodcarving. All abilities will be catered for, as each participant will receive individual tuition, and all tools and materials will be provided. Participants will be introduced to the tools and how to sharpen, maintain and use them. You will also be informed about the characteristics of different types of wood. Most will have their own sculpture to take home by the end of the course.

Conleth Gent has exhibited widely throughout Ireland and has been a multi-award winner at Sculpture in Context in the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. His work has been presented to President Mary Robinson and other dignitaries. He has worked on large scale sculptures for Dún Laoghaire and Galway County Councils.
